And the winners of the first ever IRRI and SMART BIGAS Hackathon are …

Rice. Agriculture. Food Security. Developers don’t normally develop apps around these themes but there’s always a first time, so here we go – the winners of the first EVAR IRRI (International Rice Research Institute) and Smart Communication Inc.’s BIGAS Hackathon. If you’re not familiar with the word “bigas” – this is the Filipino word for “rice”. As mentioned in the EventBrite page:

BIGAS Hackathon is a two-day developer event and hackathon hosted by the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) and Smart Communications, Inc.(Smart) and powered by SMART Developer Network (SMART DevNet), the developer community for Smart’s technology platform. We’re inviting existing and aspiring developers to create a web and/or mobile app that can be used tofurther enhance the impact of IRRI technologies especially in their delivery to farmers.

Here’s some pictures!

Here’s the award ceremonies video courtesy of Gene Hettel of IRRI and IRRI’s Director General, Bob Zeigler giving the closing remarks:

See you at the next hackathon!

Sorry, I’m not so sure but I think in the first line of this article, it should be “themes” not “teams”.
